  • Volunteering at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site

Volunteering at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site

Address:
1230 N Delaware St. Indianapolis, Indiana 46204 United States
Description:
The mission of the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site is to share the life stories, arts and culture of an American President to increase public participation in the American system of self-government. Our vision is to become the most innovative, impactful and civically-engaged presidential site in the United States by 2020. The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site is a not for profit, tax-exempt organization, whose purpose is to advance the living legacy of America’s Hoosier President, preserve the nationally significant Harrison home, and actively share the extensive collection as an educational museum and historical resource to promote public service, patriotism and good citizenship. Our biggest need is always for docents to give tours of the house. We will of course train you, give you materials to know about the house, and have you follow experienced docents. But once you have the basics down you can really structure your tour how you like! Some docents focus on the house, some the story of the family, and a couple even focus more on the civil war. I think that is the great part about volunteering here. We really give you a lot of freedom with how often you would like to be here, what kind of topics with Harrison you focus on, and whether you would like to work more with school tours, adult tours or both! We also have a need for our Welcome Center/Gift Shop. You would be in the Welcome Center checking in guests for tours, answering questions, and ringing people up for general visitation and gift shop sales! Some people are more comfortable with this if they are not as interested in teaching and discussing Harrison in the tour format. We can also make this fit into your school/work/social life however you like. Some people are here once a month, some once a week, and some just when they have the time or feel like it! So there is no time commitment really, we just love to have people here who are passionate about the history and here and who want to share it with others! Beyond that, we will work you in whenever you can!
